5 Countries that Love to Gamble

May 23, 2020 by Ian Leave a Comment

Gambling activity has skyrocketed globally over recent years, thanks to various advances in technology. The majority of the world now have access to leading online casinos and can access slots, casino games and sports betting from their ultra-convenient smartphones. The industry is usually heavily regulated, however, as the pastime still faces stereotype and opposition within societies.

It’s a tough one for governments. This jaw-droppingly lucrative industry which is fun and entertaining for many, can also provide an opportunity for negative and stressful gambling experiences for some. There has to be a balance in the regulations, in order to protect people while still reaping profits from the industry,

Of course, there are some countries that have placed a ban on gambling in its entirety, with firm sanctions for those who are caught participating. In other countries, gambling is entirely legal, with the government, the industry, and players, profiting from the pastime.

One might make the assumption that the USA and China are the two gambling leaders of the world, thanks to their flutter hotspots Las Vegas and Macau, respectively. However, there are several countries throughout the world that thoroughly enjoy gambling as a recreational activity. We’ve listed five of them.

The United Kingdom

For centuries, gambling has been a primary hobby for many in the UK. Today, the UK boasts one of the largest numbers of active gamblers; a figure which has been boosted by technological advances giving rise to the availability of UK slots online.

Ireland

Ireland is a prominent country in the global gambling industry thanks to its great horse racing culture. Many people are brought up around horses or raised on horse farms, while being brought up involved in the sport of horse racing.

The Irish, on the whole, love to gamble and the activity is very socially acceptable. Ireland has also produced several household names when it comes to bookies, such as Betfair and Paddy Power.

China

When it comes to social gambling, China is an interesting country to observe. Brick and mortar casinos, as well as online casinos, are unlawful. However, sports betting and state lotteries are hugely popular, and generate $50billion+ in revenues for the country, with the government of mainland China not legally considering the activities as gambling.

It’s a hard activity to regulate, however, as many Chinese people still find ways and means to play traditional games such as Mahjong, for example.

Interestingly, gambling can be participated in legally in the city Macau, which has become a major resort for tourism and gambling and has a separate governing system than that of mainland China. Macau is now one of the main gambling capitals of the world.

Australia

Gambling is a huge recreational activity in Australia, and is known as a ‘gambler’s haven’ for good reason. There are casinos galore, providing entertainment, lotteries and betting outlets. There is also a no tax on winnings policy, meaning players take home all that they win.

This makes the country an attractive destination for keen gamblers, plus a booming economy, plus a high quality of life. There is also a rich sports culture; all of which boosts the enviable gambling freedom of the land down under.

India

Gambling is largely illegal in India. However, the activity is increasing in popularity thanks to online betting and online poker, and the middle-classes are taking to the activity at a snowballing rate. Live feeds via online casinos provide an authentic experience for those keen to experience the thrill of a land-based casino. Diwali also traditionally features playing card games, which can lead to monetary betting.

Final Thoughts

Gambling is clearly a popular pastime all over the world, though different countries provide quite differing experiences. If you can’t visit them all, perhaps you’d like to try slots or online casino games from popular online casinos instead.
