What Should Be Known About Pork As Dog Food?

October 2, 2019 by Ian Leave a Comment

There are many ingredients that are very bad for dogs, like chocolate or onions, but is pork also on the list? Dogs are carnivorous so we always assume that absolutely all meats will be safe. However, this is not actually the case. It is really important to think about whether or not any ingredient you see on the label is safe. Fortunately, you can find really good pork dog food on the marketthe but there are things that you have to be aware of.

Will Dogs Eat Pork?

Pork is basically a term that is used to describe meat coming from pigs. It is a good and nutritious protein source. If it is fed as one part of a complete and balanced diet, it is really good for the dog. The problem is that, similarly with human food, you should be aware of different things before you choose pork as a meat source for your dog.

To put things as simple as possible, pork is usually considered to be fat-laden, processed meat due to particular cuts like bacon and sausages. A dog can easily struggle to digest pork fat. This is why dog owners have to be sure that they limit how much pork is eaten. Also, you should avoid pork table scraps as they can easily cause the development of an upset stomach. Other pork cuts that are fat less process and that are much less fatty should be considered.

Raw Pork

It is very important to only serve cooked pork. This is because uncooked pork has a high risk of being infected by parasites. When the dog consumed pork that was raw, you have to look for infection signs. This does include diarrhea, muscle pain, tiredness and vomiting. When the dog exhibits such symptoms, talk to the doctor as soon as you can as treatment might be necessary.

You should be sure that the pork you serve is not cooked with the use of spice mixes, seasonings or condiments. People add these to improve food taste but they are bad for the dog. These are highly dangerous since we do not know exact ingredients used in spices. It is possible that really dangerous, poisonous substances, like nutmeg, garlic powder or onion powder were added. Also, the flavorings used tend to include really high quantities of sugar and salt. They are very bad for the health of the dog.

Pork Bones

Unfortunately, there are way too many dog owners that do not understand the fact that feeding pork bones to dogs is a bad idea. Cooking meat makes bones fragile and brittle. They can so easily break as dogs gnaw on them. As a result, sharp splinters appear. These can hurt the mouth of the dog and even get swallowed to cause even more damage.

Bones that are uncooked are way stronger. Even so, they can still fracture and end up damaging dog teeth enamel. The very best thing that you can do is avoid bones altogether. The best alternative for you is to offer edible dental treats that are especially created to be 100% safe for dog teeth.
