Reaching your Peak as a Corporate Executive

January 18, 2019 by Ian Leave a Comment

The goal of anyone who has a job should be to be the best possible at that job. The comparison to being the best should not be made against others, it should be made against your own capabilities.

For those who enter the corporate world and seek to you reach the top of their professions, this means becoming senior management or perhaps even CEO like Louis Hernandez Jr. If someone seeks to reach these top end jobs, what becomes apparent is that there is a set of qualities that they naturally possess or have learned that allows them to continue to climb the corporate ladder.

For those watching, it can often seem as if it’s simply destiny, however we can each point to those who seem destined to reach those lofty heights and yet never attain them. Upon close examination of why people reach the top, we find that they have the capability of doing it but more importantly they have the will, the drive, and the ability to move everything out of the way that prevents them from getting there.

As importantly, they take on the tough issues relating to themselves comedy skills, and there outlooks. If you have a desire to reach your greatest potential, you need to do the same. Here are some of the things you should focus on.

Always Self-correct

When you’re moving up the ladder and moving quickly, chances are you are constantly moving off course as if it’s changed to your strong center. An airline pilot understands that an airplane never flies in a straight line, and it is a pilot’s job to constantly course-correct to keep the airplane headed towards its destination. It is the same when you’re climbing the corporate ladder, you need to constantly course-correct based on conditions that you are seeing at the time, you’re constantly changing outlook on life, people that you are interacting with, and the defined goals.

This ability to constantly self-correct, gives you an advantage over others who can only fly in a straight line. It is also a very important skill that needs to be developed if you intend on going to the top of the corporate ladder.

Stay Humble

Humility is a quality that does not always produce visible rewards. We can be involved in a project or a product at some point and know that our contributions are the ones that were the difference makers. We might feel at that point in time that we are the most important and perhaps even the only important component of what is going on.

These feelings can lead to our thinking that we are superior to others. However over time we might find that as we do more projects, our contributions are not as key to the end product and that others who were contributing less previously are now the difference makers. This is why it is important for us to remain humble as we participate in our business life.

Humility allows us to see a picture clearly and it positions others to approaches in a way that is productive and helpful to us. People who are conceited never get told the truth and are constantly looked at as uncooperative and unfriendly. To reach your peak, you need to be someone that people view as approachable, friendly, and a team player. These qualities are all part of being humble.
