5 Castles In Europe That Will Make You Feel Like You’re In A Fairy Tale

April 7, 2020 by Ian Leave a Comment

Australia has a lot going for it including sandy beaches and bustling urban centres. However, Europe has an Old World charm that is different from any other place in the world. Though other countries and continents have old ruins and interesting historical sites, Europe has many full-scale castles that stand over and above anything you have likely seen before.

Travelling to see some of these castles is a life-changing experience. Not only does exploring places like these expand your imagination, but they will also fill you with wonder and awe. Many of these castles look like they have been taken right out of a fairy tale, and seeing them will transport you to a different time and place.

Let’s look at five of the best castles to visit in Europe that will make you feel like you are in a fairy tale.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany

If there is any castle in Europe that fits the bill for a truly “fairy tale” castle, it is Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. Surrounded by forest and mountains, the massive castle stands out on the landscape. It is a huge tourist attraction in the country with thousands of visitors coming to see it each year. Located in southern Germany near Munich, a visit here will truly ignite your imagination.

Hohenwerfen Castle, Austria

When you see Hohenwerfen Castle situated at the top of a precipice deep in the Austrian Alps, you may wonder how it even got to be built there. Visit here for a guided tour which includes a walk through the weapon collection that kept this fortress safe from attack throughout the years. Bird enthusiasts will also enjoy the site’s falconry centre where trained birds of prey will put on a show for you.

Prague Castle, Czech Republic

This castle in the Czech Republic (Czechia) is the largest castle in the world. Indeed, you may even get lost while trying to explore the entire thing in one day. Within the castle walls, there are many different outbuildings and gardens to discover. It is actually still in use as a political residence; however, most of the area is now dedicated to a museum. Be sure to show up early, as tourists flock to this castle by the thousands.

Bran Castle, Transylvania

As the home of Dracula, Bran Castle in Transylvania has all of the mystique that it deserves. If you are a vampire fan and want to go to the place that started it all, then book your tickets for this picturesque location. By day, you can marvel at the architectural beauty of the structure and its scenic landscape. By night, however, be sure to carry plenty of garlic and to watch out for bats.

Orava Castle, Slovakia

Located high above the Orava River, this old castle in Slovakia is an incredible feat of architectural imagination. You may have already seen the Orava Castle in several major films that have used the setting as a backdrop. Tourists who are into the more terrifying aspects of fairy tales may also enjoy a night tour offered at this castle, just be sure to know what you are getting into.

Be Filled With Excitement And Wonder

If you want to take a trip that will inspire you and transport you into the past, then try exploring some of these castles in Europe this year. Beyond the five outlined in this list, there are even more castles and historical sites to explore, so, pack your bags and book your tickets right away.
